Angry protests erupted on Thursday in Sidi Bouzid, the birthplace of the Tunisian revolution, as thousands of people took to the streets, blocking roads and burning tyres, after the morning assassination of opposition leader Mohamed Brahmi. Gunmen have shot dead the leader of a leftist Tunisian opposition party outside his house, according to a party member .
It is the second killing of an opposition member this year, following that of Chokri Belaid of the leftist Popular Front, who was shot dead in February. His killing provoked a political crisis that nearly derailed Tunisia‘s political transition.
