“Eyes on the Street”

Articles Community Campaign Language:    Author:

In 1961 Jane Jacobs published the book The Death and Life of Great American Cities. She wrote about safety on the street, “there must be eyes upon the street, eyes belonging to those we might call the natural proprietors of the street.”

The national nonprofit “Justice for Families” used this idea and created a new poster for an upcoming event called “Night Out for Safety and Democracy”. The poster says: “I don’t watch my neighbors, I see them. We make our community safer together.” Their aim is to “promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.”
