While oppression may appear to be a display of the government’s power, skilled activists know that it’s actually a sign of weakness. The publication “Making Oppression Backfire” by the Centre for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies (CANVAS) offers techniques, tactics, methods, and examples that nonviolent activists can use to organize their campaigns to take on oppression.

The CANVAS network was established in Belgrade in 2004. Its founding members, Slobodan Djinovic and Srdja Popovic, were leaders of the Serbian youth resistance movement Otpor!, which played an instrumental role in deposing Milosevic in 2000. CANVAS has become known for its work non nonviolent democratic movements worldwide through the transfer of knowledge on strategies and tactics of nonviolent struggle.
