Awards for Monsanto’s Lobbyists

Articles Creative Resistance Language:

Representing the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) and Occupy Monsanto, a group of people went to the Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on the 9th of October to deliver “Monsanto’s Minions Awards” and also try to shut down the building’s entrances to stop corporate lobbying of making any decisions during the shutdown, by throwing fake money from a balcony. They entered the building posing as biotechnology industry lobbyists and processed food industry insiders, and went to the offices of four Senators and three Representatives to present them with the award for keeping from America’s public knowledge the genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) in the food supply. They then attempt to replicate what happened in 1967 at the New York Stock Exchange, when one Abbie Hoffman and the Yippies dumped cash out of briefcases at the entrances while lines were forming with lobbyists waiting to get in.

“The legislative pressure-cooker created by self-inflicted deadlines and crises like the fiscal cliff, the shutdown and the debt limit are the worst way to write legislation. Corporate lobbyists are here to take advantage of the situation”, said Alexis Baden-Mayer, political director of the OCA, impersonating Jennetta Kontamy-Nashun, Biotechnology Industry Awards Committee (BIAC) lobbyist.
